Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Yesterday at church we sang ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’, which is one of my favorite old hymns.  This morning during my quiet time, I decided to write out a paraphrase of this hymn, like I’ve done before with others, to help me really understand the meaning of the words, which were written by 18th-century pastor Robert Robinson. So as I’ve done on previous Monday mornings, I share this with you to help you get grounded for the week ahead, knowing that God loves to hear our praise!

Jesus, you who gives us every blessing, come to us
and make our hearts ready to sing praise to You.
Your mercy, which never ends, compels us to loudly sing your praise.
Teach us some great melody that the angels in heaven are singing;
Praise your name! I’m deeply tied to it, because it brings me forgiveness and redemption.

Right here I’m setting up a memorial to remember you by, and how with your help I got here.
And if it’s your will, I hope to get home to heaven with you soon!
I was a stranger to God because I had wandered away from him, when Jesus sought me out.
Not only that, but he completely rescued me by shedding his own blood.

Each day, I’m in debt to the grace that You have shown to me,
I pray that my wandering heart would be bound to you by Your very goodness.
On my own, I feel like I could wander away, even though I love you so much,
So take my heart, and hang on to it, so that I’ll be ready to join you in heaven someday.
